Harrison Gelber is a multifaceted and virtuosic musician currently studying at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. With a passion for music that began at the age of five, he has been honing his craft through participating in seminars, competitions, research, and a multitude of performance experiences.
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Harrison was first introduced to the world of music by beginning on piano. He began private percussion lessons at the age of eight and started playing in his school band in the sixth grade, where he fell in love with the art and advanced quickly.
Throughout his academic career, Harrison has been actively involved in various musical endeavors and leadership roles. He serves as the principal percussionist in the Furman University Symphonic Band, percussion co-section leader and alumni liaison of Furman’s Paladin Regiment Marching Band, president of the Furman Percussion Club, and has been treasurer of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity for two consecutive years.
As an actively involved student on campus, he has been a member of the Furman University Symphonic Band, Paladin Regiment Marching Band, Furman Symphony Orchestra, Furman University Percussion Ensemble, multiple jazz combos, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, National Association for Music Education, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, as well as Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education.
Harrison’s notable performance honors include being named a winner of the 2024 Concerto Competition, serving as the principal percussionist in the 2023 South Carolina Intercollegiate Honor Band, and performing at the 2022 Percussive Arts Society International Convention as a member of the Furman University Percussion Ensemble, which was named a winner of the society's 2022 International Percussion Ensemble Competition.
Beyond his on-campus activities, Harrison has also participated in multiple seminars, research opportunities, and performance activities. This includes participating in the 2023 Sandbox Percussion Seminar, hosted at The New School in New York City, being awarded a 2022 Summer Research Fellowship by the Furman Undergraduate Research Office, and participating as a fellow and performer at the Composing for Percussion Seminar. As a performer, he has been active with the Furman Lakeside Band and Poinsett Wind Symphony.
While pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, Harrison has been recognized on the Furman University Academic Dean’s List for five consecutive semesters, serves as a Furman Advantage Teaching Fellow in Music Theory, and has been a Percussion Instructor with the Wade Hampton High School Marching Generals for the past two years. In addition, he teaches private percussion lessons to students ranging in age from elementary to high school.
Harrison is a student of Omar Carmenates, and has also studied with Michael Auman, Emma Gierszal, John McAlister, Chris Thomas, and Justin Watt.
